How to Fix Certificate Errors When Setting Up Email
Resolving SSL Certificate Warnings
If you see certificate errors when configuring email, here's what to do.
Why Certificate Warnings Happen
- Server certificate is for the server hostname, not your domain
- Self-signed certificates on some servers
- Certificate name mismatch
Solution 1: Use Server Hostname
Instead of mail.yourdomain.com, use the server's actual hostname:
- Check your welcome email for the exact server name
- Example: server.hostdeal.com instead of mail.yourdomain.com
Solution 2: Accept the Certificate
If you trust the connection:
- Click "Continue" or "Accept"
- Add exception for the certificate
- This is safe for known hosting providers
Solution 3: Verify SSL is Configured
- Log into DirectAdmin
- Go to SSL Certificates
- Ensure your domain has a valid certificate
- Enable "Force SSL" for the mail subdomain
Common Error Messages
- "Certificate not trusted" - Accept or use server hostname
- "Name mismatch" - Use server hostname
- "Expired certificate" - Contact support
