Understanding Domain Propagation
Why DNS Changes Take Time
When you change DNS records, the changes don't happen instantly worldwide.
What is Propagation?
DNS servers around the world cache (store) DNS information. When you make changes, it takes time for all servers to update their cache.
Propagation Timeline
- Same ISP: Minutes to 1 hour
- Same country: 1-4 hours typical
- Worldwide: Up to 48 hours (rare)
- Average: 1-4 hours
What Affects Speed?
- TTL setting: Lower = faster propagation
- ISP caching: Some ISPs cache longer
- Browser caching: Your browser may cache DNS
Tips for Faster Propagation
- Lower TTL 24 hours before making changes
- Clear your browser cache
- Flush local DNS cache
- Try from mobile data (different DNS)
Checking Propagation
Use online tools like:
- whatsmydns.net
- dnschecker.org
During Propagation
- Some visitors see old site, some see new
- This is normal
- Don't make additional changes
- Wait for full propagation
